Gynecomastia Surgery is the name of the intervention to reduce fat tissue and the volume of breasts in men with uncontrolled breast enlargement due to various reasons.

Similar to the breast tissue in women, the breast tissue in men is composed of fat and mammary glands. Gynecomastia in men occurs due to an increase in the mammary glands and breast fat tissue. Today, one in five men experience this problem. Gynecomastia can bring along many psychological problems and it is unfortunately not possible to correct it with medication. Although some medications have been reported to be used for treatment because they are known to alter the hormone levels, no positive results have been obtained.

Is surgery necessary for the treatment of gynecomastia?

If there is stage 1 gynecomastia, liposuction can be performed. Surgery is the only solution for other stages of gynecomastia.

Which liposuction method is preferred for the treatment of gynecomastia?

Liposuction is performed for the treatment of male breast enlargement due to excess fat tissue. Classical or laser liposuction may be preferably selected for the treatment. Laser liposuction is more advantageous than the conventional method. Fat cells in the breast tissue are more easily broken down and removed by the laser liposuction method. Furthermore, problems such as edema and bruising occur to a less extent after the intervention. During laser liposuction, both the removal of fat cells and the lifting of the breast skin is accomplished. Patients experience a more comfortable recovery period compared to the classical liposuction method.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

The most common worldwide cause of gynecomastia is the disturbed estrogen and testosterone balance. Gynecomastia may also occur in men due to lack of physical activity, unbalanced diet, and side effects of certain medications.

At what age does gynecomastia occur?

It usually occurs in the ages between 18 and 25 years. However; in 30% of the cases, gynecomastia tends to regress after 25 years of age and disappear spontaneously.

Can Gynecomastia Be Treated With Medical Treatment?

Surgical intervention is accepted as the gold standard in the treatment of gynecomastia in men. The likelihood of success is very limited with the use of anti-estrogen drugs. However, medical treatment for gynecomastia is not recommended because the side effects of medication are very risky.

Does Gynecomastia Cause Breast Cancer?

Gynecomastia in men does not cause breast cancer and does not increase the existing risk.

Is there an age limit for gynecomastia surgery?

Surgical intervention can be performed at any age starting from 17 years of age. Surgery can be performed at earlier ages, too, as long as the puberty period ends.

How is gynecomastia diagnosed?

Blood and hormone tests are usually sufficient for making the diagnosis. If necessary, further examinations such as USG, MRI or CT can be performed.

Can Gynecomastia develop Again After The Surgery?

Gynecomastia does not occur again after the surgery. However, there is a potential risk when weight gain of approximately 20 kg occurs.

Which Type Of Anesthesia Is Administered For Gynecomastia Surgery?

Surgery is usually performed when the patient is under local anesthesia. In rare cases, gynecomastia surgery can be performed when the patient is under general anesthesia if the physician deems it necessary.
